Jaw (TMJ) Pain?

Do you have:
Dull, aching pain in the jaw?
Difficulty in swallowing, biting, opening and closing the mouth
Headache and dizziness?
A clicking or popping sound on opening and closing the mouth?
Pain in the ears?
Stiffness in the jaw muscles?

The Temporo-mandibular joint is commonly referred to as TMJ. There are two joints, one on either side of the head, located in front of your ears where your lower jaw meets the skull. You can feel the joint when you place your fingers in front of your ears on either side of your head and open and close your mouth. The TMJ allows your jaw to hinge when you eat your food, talk and sing, yawn etc. It is one of the most commonly used joints in the body.
TMJ disorder refers to pain or discomfort in the temporo-mandibular joint area which involves the jaw joint and the muscles surrounding it.

Various factors may cause the problem, stress being common, often resulting in clenching & grinding. Arthritis or trauma and misalignment of teeth are amongst other causes.

Osteopathic manipulative treatment, is not only a natural & gentle way to relieve the pain; it can help rebalance the facial muscles and re-align the jaw, as well as the sockets at the base of your skull where the joints move. This allows restoration of normal function to the TMJ and surrounding structures.

The number of treatments required varies according to the cause & history and will be discussed with you by the practitioner, but generally, results will be discernable starting within a few treatments.
